spider-man.
this is a work-in-progress...
earth-616
this is a mix of important! stories and stories that i've just plain enjoyed, of varying significance. as a note, i, like a lot of people, did
not enjoy dan slott's run on
amazing spider-man, so whilst there are a few stories from that era that are arguably important, i'm not the biggest fan of going back and reading them so... if there's something i've missed that you think should be on here, soz!
(that said, omd and omit are unfortunately fairly necessary in terms of understanding
where the fuck we're at with certain current storylines, so like...
yeah.)
CURRENT
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. ( 2018 - present, nick spencer )
focusses on the bigger storylines. if you only read one current run, this is the one you'll need to read for things to make sense. if you're not sure where to start reading
spider-man comics, this is a good place to start. there are a few callbacks to previous events, but nothing too over-the-top.
it conveniently starts at issue #1, so you don't have any of that 'but what ridiculously high issue number am I starting with here?' to deal with.
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN. ( 2019, tom taylor )
focusses more on smaller stories, as indicated by the "friendly neighborhood" part of the title. it's a little more personal. it has its ups and downs and a couple of the arcs are questionable, it has some
great issues and was a fun companion piece to spencer's
amazing.
it's only 14 issues long.
PAST
if this be my destiny
amazing spider-man, #31-33. this is for you if you're ever going 'but what was that issue with the thing and the water?'
the night that gwen stacy died.
amazing spider-man, #121-122. the title's kind of a giveaway here.
the death of jean dewolff.
peter parker, the spectacular spider-man, #107-110. AGAIN the title is a bit of a giveaway. this is
also when spidey meets DD.
the alien costume saga
amazing spider-man, #252-263; spectacular spider-man, #90-100; marvel team-up, #141-150; web of spider-man, #1.
dat black suit, basically.
kraven's last hunt
web of spider-man, #31-32; amazing spider-man, #293-294; spectacular spider-man #131-132. i mean, title giveaway.... OR IS IT.
police story
peter parker: spider-man (1999), #26. what does law enforcement think of spider-man? super enjoyable tbh.
happy birthday
amazing spider-man (1999), #57-57; amazing spider-man (1963), #500-502. someone's a birthday boy. i unironically love this one, okay?
sensational spider-man #28, a cute story that deals with peter's unmasking from the pov of one of his students
to have and to hold
sensational spider-man, annual #1. hahaha this was right before
omd. fuck.
MISC
JMS' run as a whole
of all the modern runs, this is my favourite. unfortunately, there are a few duds (
sins past, looking at u), and it ended with the very, very unfortunate
one more day, which like... you'll know it when you get to it. it's sign-posted.). starts with
amazing spider-man (1999), #30 through #58, then goes from
amazing spider-man (1963), #500 to #545
superior spider-man
that time doc ock had peter parker's body, basically.
30 issues.
spider-man: family business
if you jump into zdarsky's run on
spectacular or have been reading spencer's run on
amazing and have been going "what the fuck, who is (
spoiler )?", this is what you need to read first.
peter parker: spectacular spider-man
zdarsky's run, it starts off at issues #1 through #6; then the numbering jumps to #297 to #310. the first handful of issues aren't great, but then it really steps up a notch. issue
#310 is a
particularly spectacular (haha do u see what i did there) read.
spider-man: blue
this is a cute, melancholy revisit of peter and gwen stacy's relationship and what it meant for and to pete. it's not breaking any new ground, but if you're struggling with how dated the early comics are, this is an alternative. it's not exactly canon, but it's a good read.
parallel lives
a cute revisit of peter and mj's relationship.
