In theory, we exist on one plane of existence, or membrane, or flying carpet, or however you want to envision it. The strings in string theory can also refer to other flying carpets, even ones we don't know are there. Which is where we encounter an issue: a lot of the dimensions are hidden from us, right? Because they're tiny, or because they're warped, but even if they're not visible or accessible to us, that doesn't mean they don't affect what we observe in the universe.
Regardless, when you slam these particles together, debris from the collision is ejected into the greater cosmos. The way this is measured is simply by measuring the increase or decrease in energy.
So once you know one of these other flying carpets exists, it's just a matter of getting there. The how depends entirely on the where.

He discovered what we refer to as the 'Negative Zone'. The most distinctive characteristic is that it's composed entirely of anti-matter, so anyone or thing that moves from our universe to it has to reverse its polarity on a molecular level, otherwise... It's not pretty. He created the portal between our two universes. I don't even quite understand the ins and the outs of it.
Other times, it's just looking at it from the right angle. Or lack of angles. Not necessarily curves, but...
But honestly? The simplest way of thinking about is doors. Sometimes your key fits, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you've got to go get a whole new set cut, and sometimes you've got to replace the locks. Figuring out which you've got to do takes time, effort, and a whole lot of equipment we don't have here.
But this isn't Ikea. There's no 'one size fits all'. There's a LOT that could go wrong.

I'm not going to sit here and say that from a scientific standpoint, wherever we are and however we're here isn't fascinating to me, but it's also terrifying.
